Cat Breeds

Domestic cats have been diversified by humans into different breeds and domestic and wild hybrids. You may know about dog breeds already, but what is a "hybrid"? A hybrid in this context is a cat mixed with a variety of different purebred cat breeds. Different cat registries officially recognize a different number of breeds, making the distinction even more hard to follow (most certainly harder to follow than dogs typically are!). One cat could be considered different breeds in different registries, such as a Himalayan cat being classified as a colorpoint variety of the Persian in a different registry. It can be a bit confusing, but that's what makes it fun!

The top twelve most popular cat breeds according to The Spruce Pets are the Siamese, Persian, Maine Coon, Ragdoll, Bengal, Abyssinian, Birman, Oriental Shorthair, Sphynx, Devon Rex, Himalayan, and the American Shorthair. These breeds are popularized due to their coat color, temperament, length of their fur, and their cuteness appeal in general. My personal favorite cat breed from the list is the Ragdoll--I really enjoy how cute they look and I bet they're super soft. I have two cats, but none of them are specific breeds; they're classified as "domestic hybrids" like I explained in the previous paragraph, but they're still just as cute as any purebred cat!
